My parents have lived in Fife for roughly thirteen years and ever since we first moved here, my mum and I would take short car journeys to explore the surrounding local villages. Over the years, Kinross and Loch Leven have become a firm favourite of ours. Kinross is attractively located on the shores of Loch Leven, and there are boat trips around the loch and to Lochleven Castle - a late 14th or early 15th century tower where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567.
What to do in Kinross?
I'm going to be completely honest with you, Kinross is a small village, but I still think it's a lovely place to spend an afternoon. If you're like me and enjoy snapping photos where ever you go, Kinross has plenty of quaint little streets to wander down. If you enjoy a spot of charity shops, I'd recommend popping into CHAS's (Children's Hospices Across Scotland) charity shops. There's also a sweet little gift shop called Avant Garde Gifts. There are two, one dedicated to women's clothing and another with books, bric-a-brac and men's clothing.
If it's a nice day why not walk down to Loch Leven. There are a few things you can do, if you've brought your bike you can cycle around the Loch Leven Heritage Trail or there's the option to visit Loch Leven Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive, the boat to island runs from April to 30 September. There is also an old cemetery called the Kirkgate Graveyard which lies next to Kinross House and boasts wonderful views over Loch Leven and across to Benarty Hill where you'll spot the sleeping giant.
Also, a short drive away is RSPB's Vane Farm which is well worth a visit.
Where to eat in Kinross?
With regard to where to eat or drink, it's surprising considering the size of the village, but Kinross has a good selection of cafes to pop into for a cuppa. First, as its name suggests, the Court House is based in Kinross's stunning former court house buildings. Not only do they offer homemade cakes and looseleaf teas, they also serve up pizza! A new addition to the village is Angel Cakes Cake Shop & Tearoom, a charming family-run business. Next, a personal favourite of ours is Le Jardin Cafe which is joined onto Dobbies Garden Centre.
